|Some of my Jew’s harps, made of wood, bamboo, bronze, metal. Jaw’s harps are small twangy instruments held in the mouth and played by plucking at the reed. Their notes are easily recognizable in Bluegrass songs, but they are played in other genres as well. They are fun to play, and make good gifts for people of all ages who have an interest in musical instruments.
The distinctive sounds of the sheng and the kouxian have been enhanced through the use of electronic amplification—and, in the case of the sheng, a key system—coupled with rhythmic breath control techniques. In recent years, performers have also begun using throat” singing, a way of emphasizing overtones produced by the vocal chords, more frequently. Such additions add a greater expressivity and a new voice to these ancient instruments.
Before I played a custom made « komus » Jew’s harp but this one is absolutely other story. The tongue’s end is not comfortable to play cause of its sharp edge – it should be the round one for fast and comfortable playing (finally my thing became broken). The sound fades very quickly.
In the studio I always stand for the acoustic instruments, also flutes and recorders, would sound on the record as live and natural as possible. The contrasts are everywhere and every time – day and night, dark and light. They always seem to be against each other, but actually, together they attain perfection. Little flutes fit well together with big (sounded) instruments.
We are aware that purchasing gamelan orchestras or instruments from overseas can be a complicated and frustrating process without professional experience and fluid communication on the ground in Bali. This is why we make the utmost effort to personalise your purchase and supervise the quality of the craftsmanship, tuning and handling of all instruments before they are shipped to your door. Quality control is carried out personally by Balinese gamelan researcher and longtime Bali resident, Vaughan Hatch, who is also the co-founder of Mekar Bhuana. This expertise is included in the price of all our orchestras and instruments, and justifies the price you are paying to have professional instruments that will last you a life-time.
